Situated in the lap of the Trishul Massif, the Roopkund Trek is hidden below a crest on the edge of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Roopkund attracts trekkers not only for its beauty, but also for the mysterious shallow lake that surrounds in this high altitude. Roopkund Trek came into limelight when a large number of human skeletons and remains of horses were found perished near the lake. In the recent past scientists from different country determined that the people perished due to hailstorm, with hail as large as cricket balls, and with nowhere to hide, the group perished, and their jewellery, skulls, bones and preserved tissue of bodies can still be discovered today.

The Trek to Roopkund passes through lush green grassy land and conifer forests which cling into the slope of hills. En route to the kund offers magnificent views of giant Himalayan peaks i.e Trishul, Ronti, Nanda Ghunti, Changabang , Caukhamba , Bunder Punchh, Hathi parvat among others. The trek is tough at times, as the altitude is the main factor with the added unpredictability of weather at such altitude adding to the challenge!

After the river is crossed a steep climb through the dense forest of Rhododendron and Oak takes one to Gairoli Patal. The trail still continues to climb to the ridge called Dolia Dhar which is marked with the presence of a temple. From here there is a bifurcation to the Ali meadows. One must avoid the trail to Auli and traverses on the left to gain a steady ascent to the alpine grazing meadows of Bedni, known as one of the best camping sites in the Garhwal Himalayas. With grazing pastures all around your camp and very close views of the Trishul & Nanda Ghunti peaks its truly a divine spot. Overnight stay in tents. Ali bugyal

  • Day 06:Bedni Bugyal – Bagubassa (4100 mts/13450 ft) (8 km/ 4-5 hrs) After Bedni Bugyal (11,500 ft), the trek went up and up; the tree line had finished before Ali Bugyal, so the air was thin and low in oxygen making walking up a bit more strenuous than what it had been so far. The trail from Bedni continues to climb gradually on the true left of the valley to the ridge at the end of the meadow. The peak of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul the highlights during this trek. From this point the trail moves on to the true right of the valley and becomes almost flat until it reaches Patar Nachaniya. You will have to crest another ridge coming to the shrine at Kalu Vinayak marked with the Temple of Ganesha. The view of Neelkanth, Chaukhamba & Hathi Parbat peaks dominates the entire area. A further 01 Kms brings one to Bagubassa. The campsite at Bagubassa is marked with open rocky structures. Bagua means flowery park and Basa means place. This trail is step at sections and there are possibilities of it being under snow for about 9-10 months. If there is not too much of snow around the lake you will get to see human bones and skeletons. These remains have been preserved in the alpine condition for centuries. It is believed that these are the remains of about 300 persons who died about 500 -600 years ago. There are spectacular views from the region. You will spend some time here and also have the option of climbing up a short distance towards the ridge of Jurangali. You spend some time here taking pictures and then retrace your steps to Bedni bugyal Overnight in tents.
